Every culture is a beauty culture but standards for beauty are quite diverse. Taken to extremes, some beauty rituals can even be dangerous. What is beauty to you, those around you and people from other cultures—do you share the same ideas and motivations? And what about those individuals that have more important things to worry about than which lipstick shade might be most suitable or the best skin lightening cream??? An anthropological perspective of beauty with contributions by Sierra College students and faculty. Presentation by Jennifer Molina-Stidger, Anthropology Professor.

Film Series: Real Women Have Curves

Join us for a viewing of this indie film portraying the life of a Mexican American teenager (America Ferrera) trying to cope with her dream of college and her quarrelsome relationship with her loving but problematic mother. Funny, touching and ultimately a triumph in full-bodied (no pun intended) protagonists without compromising it's illustration of how society and culture decide what is pleasing to the eye and therefore acceptable.

Author Peach Friedman and her book Diary of an Exercise Addict

Author, eating disorder educator, and personal trainer, Peach Friedman joins us to share her new book, Diary of an Exercise Addict. In the book, Friedman recounts her descent into a life-threatening illness, her remarkable recovery, and the setbacks along the way. With refreshing candor she lays bare her relationships with family, friends, and lovers and the repressed desire that finally surfaced as she found her own way back to health. Following her book reading, Friedman will do a book signing. Books are available through our bookstore.

While mainstream pop culture grows increasingly pornographic, the pornography industry produces hardcore material that is both more overtly cruel toward women and more widely accepted than ever. Pornography today is a multi million dollars cultural industry. Yet it is surrounded by controversies. Is it empowering or is it degrading to women? Is it a dangerous addiction or a harmless fantasy? Is porn all about freedom of speech and sexual liberation or should it be subject to censorship? What impact does pornography have on our sex lives and relationships? Join the distinguished Sierra College faculty, students and community members as they engage in a multi faceted debate on various issues related to pornography.
